My First Thanksgiving

Yet another American tradition I am taking part in for the first time!

Thanksgiving Day (and the whole week leading up to it) was a great experience.  Not only was there  lots of good food, but I also got to meet a lot of my second-cousins and their significant others for the first time.
What a great holiday/ tradition Thanksgiving is, to include all races and religions.  I think every country should allocate a specific date in the year for people to reflect about (and actually say out loud) what they are thankful for!

The Food

AT LEAST a week before the actual Thanksgiving Day, the menu is already thoroughly thought out and planned.  There are so many people and so many different food preferences so it is important to find the right recipes while keeping in mind the traditional menu items for the occasion...

From the left of the table and moving around: Clark, Amber, Brandon, Laura, Marissa, Lani, Crystal, Melanie, Makita (myself), & Heidi.  Missing from this photo is Chris, who was taking the picture.
Especially for my Fiji peoples, I have listed for your interest...

The Menu:
  • roast turkey
  • winter squash rolls
  • sweet potatoes w/ ricotta cheese
  • vegetable herb stuffing
  • cranberry sauce w/ mint and basil
  • pear and Roquefort salad
  • mashed potatoes
  • pumpkin pie and apple pie w/ ice cream and whipped cream (for dessert)
If you've just read the above, I'm sorry for making you hungry! :D

Family Time

The US is so big that even though someone might live in a neighboring state, it is usually a very long drive or an expensive flight away.  This is the case with my Oregon Family - as all the kids (except for Lani) live hours and hours away from home, family time during special occasions is cherished.  Below are just a few photos that capture some nice moments.

Wreath Making Activity

Aunt Heidi is quite an experienced wreath maker as she was part of the Black Butte School Christmas wreath making/ fundraising team for a few years.  She suggested this activity and everyone was keen to try it (most of us were wreath making newbies).  The first part of the activity requires going out into the woods to pick supplies, so with gloves, mini saws and pruners we set out.  I really enjoyed our branch gathering venture - although it was chilly, the cool earthy smell was so refreshing!

Back at home, the project took up the space of the whole dining table

Isn't this a cute pic of Laura?!

I had a wonderful first Thanksgiving week and I can't imagine a nicer family to have spent it with.  What a great way to kick off the 2011 holiday season...  Thank you everyone for making my experience a great one.  Thanksgiving 2012 will have a tough time competing.

It's Snowing!!!

Here are some pictures of the first big snowfall of the year here in Camp Sherman, Oregon.

It snowed the week before Thanksgiving. I was very excited as I hadn't seen snow for quite a few years.  When I woke up that morning I immediately opened the blinds to see if the weather predictions were right.  And they were - it was white all around. I then ran to the living room to see the rest of the yard through the windows.  I love a white winter!...The following photos were taken on Saturday, November 19th.

AFTER: Front of house with snow!

I love the snow on the branches

 Snow Angel!

Leilani, my (second) cousin & Jake her dog.  We took a walk into the woods behind their home to enjoy the snow.

Duck in the pond.... don't worry, it's a fake

The creek was icy

I'm actually a Fijian.

Lani, Jake and I.  The snow was perfect for forming snowballs (notice one on top of Lani's head?)

Although the weather is freezing, I do enjoy a winter wonderland!  Unfortunately for us here in Camp Sherman, the snow didn't last.  By Thanksgiving Day, it had completely melted away.

Sisters

While I was in Central Oregon, I lived in a place called Camp Sherman, which is basically a community of homes and a couple camp sites/ tourist lodges, so, I wouldn't call it a town.  Apart from having lovely country, Camp Sherman has a Post Office, primary school and convenience store, but that is about it.  In order to do grocery shopping and take Lani to school, we travel to a little town called Sisters, about 20 minutes away.  Sisters is named after a range of mountains nearby called the "Three Sisters".  The town itself is well kept and many of the buildings are historic looking - I don't remember seeing any  very modern structures or any buildings over three stories tall... Sisters is known for the great variety of outdoor activities it offers and also for being a place of culture and art.  I have taken some photos to show the natural beauty of the place.  Hope you like the snowy Sisters as much as I do!

This first photo shows the road on the way from Camp Sherman to Sisters - this road is straight for almost a mile and is bordered by pine trees most of the way!

The Three Sisters

Landscape on the perimeter of the Town.  It may seem a little brown since it is the end of Fall/ early Winter.

Yellow school bus!  This photo is taken near to the Sisters Middle School

Good morning, Sisters!  Pic taken after dropping Lani off at school -- there is still frost on the ground.

Typical Sisters farm:  fields then pine forest and mountains in the background.

Local bank - very Country-western looking, right?
Sorry, this isn't a very good photo, but it will give you a glimpse of part of the town.
A ranch on the outskirts of town...
Gorgeous, even on an overcast day!
Although most of my photos, above, show a very rural country, the Sisters Town does have enough going on to keep one busy... and there are quite a few little restaurants and boutiques, a movie theatre, and a couple large grocery stores (or 'department stores' haha!  (it's a joke Heidi, Chris and I have :) )... In fact, there is even a Subway and McDonald's, so if you are a 'city person', don't worry, you will survive!!

PS.  You may want to Google search images of the mountains to get a better idea, because I feel like my photography doesn't do the Three Sisters justice

Our 'Lucky' 11-11-11

There was a lot of media hype about the date 11-11-11 (last week Friday) and how it was supposed to be a lucky day.... Here in Central Oregon, the day turned out to be pretty eventful!

The Lucky

Despite reports that there was going to be poor weather that Friday, it was really a very nice morning.  It was nice enough for a hike.  Together with Heidi (my aunt), Chris (her fiance) and Crystal (my second cousin) we set off to hike Black Butte, a extinct volcanic cone that rises 938m and that is pretty close to where we live.  (We actually drive 1/2 way up Black Butte then hike the rest.)    The hike is kinda long; it took a few hours, but it was worth it - the view is amazing!

On our way up - with my cousin Crystal...

A view of 'Three Fingered Jack' on the way up

Looking out to Mt Washington from the Black Butte trail

Snow ball attack!

Crystal and I, who were ahead a little, tried to ambush Chris and Heidi!

We reached the top!  It took over an hour of uphill hiking, but it was definitely worth it.  The view was simply breathtaking

I need a break! lol

Chris packed a nice picnic lunch for us to eat at the top

Heading back down, the view is still fabulous!

If you look really closely you will spot Crystal on the trail

The Unlucky

That evening was nothing short of maddness...
Taken off Heidi's Facebook:
CRAZY, crazy night. Here's the story, condensed version. Wind storm. Driving out of Camp Sherman after dark to pick up our 'rescue' dog. Just as we round a curve, big tree across the road. Chris swerves down the middle, and we bump our way over the top of the shattered mid-section. Car approaches from the other direction, they too bump over the top. In darkness and wind four of us pull what we can from the road. Call the sheriff to remove what we can't. Return from town with the new dog. Phone call from Crystal. "Mom, a tree came down in the wind and crushed Emily's car!" (Crystal and friends staying at a near-by cabin.) It's a direct hit on the car. The two story garage building that it is parked in front of is barely grazed. The car is a crumbed soda can. Girls are too unnerved to stay at the cabin in the trees, so come to our house. We arrive to a dark house. No power. Makita (just recently arrived from Fiji) has been home alone in the dark. Light all the candles, etc. And oh, saw my first 'moon bow'--a complete rainbow in the dark sky. Would have been cooler if we weren't dealing witha crushed car, upset girls, no power, new dog... But we have an oddly fun evening with a house full of girls (7) and Chris. Parrot was on her hysterical laugh binge, got everyone laughing, in spite of the shock of Emily's crushed car. All the while the new dog (a delightful, charming little thing..) quietly mingles with Tess, three cats, noisy parrot, crowd of new faces..
Basically, that evening there was a storm (heavy rain and winds).  The family here (not including myself) drove out to a nearby town to pick up a new dog they are adopting and on the way encountered a fallen tree, which delayed their trip!  Meanwhile, I was at home with Crystal (cousin) and her friend when they got a call from the from a neighbour who said that a tree had fallen on a car at the cabin they were staying at!!  The car actually belonged to one of Crystal's other friends who was visiting from Portland City too.  Crystal and her friend rushed off to see what was going on with their other friends and the car.  I was at home alone when, to top it all of, the power goes off!!
When everyone gathered together again at home a couple hours later, we lit candles and ate food... The really funny thing was that the parrot, Kabo-Kabo, got all excited and was on a hysterical laughing binge for ages - She mocked our laughs and it really sounded like a human laughing!!  Everybody was cracking up in laughter at the parrot!

Here are some photos of the crushed car as well as a couple other photos of accidents that happened that night due to the storm:

Fortunately, the garage remained undamaged...
but the car was done for!

completely crushed
From this pic you can see that the tree, which must have been rotting, broke off half-way before landing straight onto the car
Further down the road this car was smashed
This photo, off FB, shows damages to a home in a nearby area.  This tree went through the roof of the home then 5 feet through the floor!

A few days later we went to clean up the debris around car 1.  It was a huge job to clear the tree and branches off the driveway.  It took 3 people + saws, shovels, brooms and a wheel barrow at least two days!

Before clean up
After clean up
The local newspaper published an article about the damage that happened on the weekend of the 11/11/11 and even quoted Heidi.  Here is the link to the article:
